Story Studies

We are a collaborative group of interdisciplinary researchers dedicated to exploring the powerful role that stories and storytelling play in shaping identity, fostering a sense of belonging, overcoming impostor phenomenon, and supporting persistence in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) disciplines. Drawing from diverse fields such as education, psychology, engineering, and the learning sciences, our work investigates how narrative practices—whether personal stories, peer narratives, or curricular storytelling interventions—can positively influence how individuals see themselves within STEM contexts.

Our research spans a range of methodologies, from qualitative studies of student narratives to the design and evaluation of storytelling-based instructional interventions. We are particularly interested in how storytelling can help students, especially those from historically marginalized or underrepresented groups, connect their lived experiences to disciplinary ways of knowing, seeing themselves as capable and legitimate participants in STEM fields. Through this work, we aim to identify strategies that promote inclusive learning environments and support the long-term engagement and success of diverse learners in STEM education and careers.
